"The Distance" comes out w/guitars blazing. It has a great wall of sound, like a live Hicks concert. "What's Right Is Right", an impassioned Hicks belts out this tune w/a delivery that tuggs at your very heartstrings. It must be said that this album showcases a whole different spectrum of Hicks' vocals that even his staunchest fans have not heard before. His voice is a finely tuned machine, shifting gears, and it's all créme de la créme. "New Found Freedom", Hicks dips his toes in the big pool of Gospel music with his own uplifting message and is also backed by a Gospel Choir. I hope for more Gospel on the Hicks menu in the future. He understands the allure of Gospel's focus on melody. What comes to mind is this, "Got Hicks? Got Church." meaning he takes fans "to Church" when they experience his live performances."Nineteen": A poignant, path of a young soldier sung & delivered by Hicks with insistant pride for one of our country's fallen "few good men". "Once Upon a Lover", slices & bits of my love letters & rememberances.Flattered? You better believe it. "Seven Mile Breakdown" Country/Rock tinged, (this song also sounds great pared down, just Hicks & his acoustic guitar - see Wendy Williams show 9/2010)"Maybe You Should" there's an extraordinarily beautiful edge to Hicks' voice in this song that delivers a potent dosage of a gentle ultimatum to a ladylove. "Keeping It Real", a playful jab at tabloid stars. "I Live On A Battlefield",how the give & take of a relationship can be akin to the statement "All Is Fair in Love & War". "Wedding Day Blues",funny song that must be every groom's nightmare. "Woman's Got to Have It", Hicks' take on a Bobby Womack song. Elliot Yamin, alum from American Idol duets with Hicks & they hit the smooth, groove deftly in this duet. Look for the Target Special Edition Bonus 12th Track "An Indiscriminate Act of Kindness" an overwhelmingly powerful vocal, sung in an almost hushed whisper at the intro, with glorious & delicious note-bending, (nobody does it better, Mr. Hicks). Walmart's Special Edition of "The Distance" had a 12th bonus track of Hicks' version of "Hide Nor Hair" made famous by Ray Charles.(haven't found a single copy available anywhere)
