'Drones and Clones' by Swervedriver's Adam Franklin which was originally released as a download only in 2013, contains ten instrumental incantations - placing emphasis on the sounds that usually skulk in the backgrounds of songs from the first three Adam Franklin albums.
Adam Franklin revisits 9 songs from his three (more or less) solo albums during Swervedriver's hiatus: Spent Bullets, Bolts of Melody, and I Could Sleep for a Thousand Years, in instrumental versions, plus one song that seems to be new. When you consider the musical richness and multi-layered sound that runs through all his work, it's interesting that he has previously recorded very few instrumental tracks. These 9 are songs, as is sort of pointed out in the album title, that had words and were turned into instrumentals, and the result can be compared to the kind of thematic film music that Franklin engaged in his most recent solo work.Taking the lyrics out of these songs I know pretty well, doesn't take anything away from their evocative power. The sense of cinematic narrative is only heightened by just listening to the music. As a whole, the album is a great experience-extremely listenable and seems like a perfect expression of his music.
